6 Speed Manual Transmission Toyota Matrix Xrs 2004

The 'Ask Jack' Toyota Matrix XR makes a pilgrimage from Toronto to Ohio. With a new-to-it six-speed manual transmission. I had a 2004 with the 5 speed manual. Just under $3000. I bought a Matrix XRS in its first year of production. It had the 6 speed manual transmission. I found the shifting to be uncomfortable, also, and not smooth at all. When the clutch wore out at 29,000 miles or so, and Toyota told me that it was 'normal wear', I went right over to Honda and traded it in on a Civic. I own a 2004 Toyota Matrix 2wd base model with 5-speed manual transmission. I had 75,000 miles on it and very few issues until one day on the highway, the transmission seized up completely. May 03, 2010 I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix xrs 6 speed manual transmission. I purchased the car new and have serviced the car with the dealership from day one. Today I brought it in for its 45000 mile service and told them to check the clutch because we noticed it sticking/slipping in 5th gear.

It seems that many Matrix owners are having problems with a faulty transmission bearing which necessitates the transmission needing to be replaced prematurely.

We had to replace our five-speed manual transmission on our Toyota Matrix at 98,000 miles! I sent a certified letter to the president of Toyota Motor Corp. North America. I was told since there is no recall, I would not be compensated. The cost was $3,100!
Please sign my petition at http://www.change.org/petitions/unbearable-transmission-bearing Hopefully if there are enough signatures, Toyota will do a recall.
Thank you!!

The clutch on my 2004 Matrix went at 150,000kms. Brutal. Although this is a consumable, I really didn't expect to be replacing the clutch at such an early stage of the vehicle's life. In talking to the transmission guy I was told that Toyota undersized this clutch (likely using the same one for vehicles that are smaller than the Matrix & with less power, for many years).
Next time Toyota, size the clutch to the vehicles weight, power and use. Come on.

The manual transmission failed on my 04 Matrix. Transmission had to be replaced. No fifth gear, loud grinding sounds. Googled 'Toyota Matrix manual transmission failures' found a web site at Edmunds with over 350 posting!!!! They don't sell many Martixs, and way fewer with the manual. This car is nothing special in the fit and finish department either. My 95 Neon was a little better. Has lots of squeaks and rattles. Bought car new, lots of highway miles. It has had an easy life.

My 2004 Toyota Matrix xr with manual transmission has suddenly displayed severe mechanical noise from the engine/transmission area. Smog technicians wouldn't take liability to run engine for smog tests to register for the coming year, so is now registered as planned non-operation until I can get the car fixed. Googling 'Toyota Matrix transmission noise' or 'Toyota Matrix engine noise' leads to several sites in which too many owners are either experiencing complete engine loss due to 'oil sludge problem' or total transmission loss due to 'admitted transmission bearing design flaw'. I will not drive this car again on the roadway due to the possibility of sudden and complete loss of transmission function at any time. This car is a great design for functionality, but I am totally dismayed and frustrated that at 120,000 miles, the car is off the road for serious engine and transmission flaws that appear to be very common, considering I bought Toyota for the reliability that we all know so much about. I have kept up on the oil changes since they were pre-purchased for 5 years when I bought the car, and have kept fresh after the 5 years expired. Very disappointed with the fate that this car has presented me, and the costs that I will have to incur to get it back on the road.- Prunedale, CA, USA
