Virtually every Toyota made since the 1980s has sensors that measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust, then transmit that signal back to the ECM so it can determine the proper air/fuel mixture for the engine — helping your car to run as efficiently as possible while reducing emissions. That’s the basic function of the O2 sensor, here’s what you need to know about oxygen sensors and their failure.

  • Feb 25, 2018  first the quest, this is common for nissan, replace the knock sensor, this sensor is located under the intake manifold rear of engine, some models you can sneak sensor out without removing the intake, this will take care of that car. Now the camry, im guessing this is a 4 cylinder engine, replace the air fuel sensor (oxygen sensor) thats on the exhaust manifold. This will solve that problem.

Your Toyota’s oxygen sensor works as a monitor — the tip is placed inside the exhaust pipe and detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. If there is too much oxygen, it’s too lean, and too little would be too rich, it sends a signal to the ECM to adjust the mixture. When your O2 sensor is going bad, your ECM can’t probably adjust the mixture.

Toyota Camry Oxygen Sensor Problems

Signs of a Bad O2 Sensor

When an oxygen sensor is bad in your Toyota, expect the following issues:

Poor fuel economy. Depending on the location of the sensor, the fuel delivery and combustion systems can become extremely irregular by a bad O2 sensor. If too much fuel is sent to the engine, it will cause gas milage to suffer.

Engine pinging. A bad O2 sensor can cause timing issues that will causing engine pinging. This occurs when the combustion gases ignite at the wrong time.

Rough engine idle. When your Toyota has a bad O2 sensor, it will often idle irregularly or roughly.

Engine misfires. A bad oxygen sensor can disrupt the engine combustion, causing it to misfire. These misfires are usually more pronounced at lower idle speeds.

Engine trouble codes. This is the easiest way of knowing if your Toyota has a bad oxygen sensor — it will send a DTC to the ECM. Usually the check engine light will illuminate on the dash, but this sometimes doesn’t happen right away, so scan it for codes.

Once you determine the oxygen code is in need of replacement, you need to address this part right away. Replacement with a genuine Toyota oxygen sensor is simple and can be done fairly quickly. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Find the oxygen sensor by looking for a spark plug looking part connected into your Toyota’s exhaust — it will have an electrical connection on it.
  • Disconnect the electrical connection using a flathead screwdriver to push in the tab and pull the connector apart.
  • Unscrew the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe using an open ended wrench.
  • Reverse the steps to replace the new sensor, making sure not to over tighten to sensor so you won’t strip the threads.
  • Plug the connector back in.
  • Use a scanner to clear the code by turning your car to the run position without cranking it, clear to code with the scanner.
  • Crank the car, you should notice a fairly significant difference at this point.

Remember to only use OEM quality oxygen sensors and related replacement parts to avoid damage and premature failure to the effected systems.

Toyota Camry Oxygen Sensor Location

Failure Date: 12/14/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. While the contact's vehicle was idling at a stop light, it was rear ended by another vehicle. The air bag failed to deploy. The contact sustained neck and lower back injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The contact was able to coast the vehicle over to the side of the road. When the contact attempted to drive the vehicle, it failed to start. The contact powered off and restarted the engine, but the vehicle failed to drive and began shaking. All the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was driven to the contact's residence and later towed to a collision center where it was diagnosed that the po171/02 sensor failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was unknown.

July 2016, check engine light came on. Diagnostic indicated code p171. Was advised it was a laundry list of systems to check for this code. ( replaced the following; flex pipe, 02 sensor, spark plugs and fuel pump. For a total of 1400. 00) while driving on I-95 at 60 mph, airbag light, brake light, abs light and seat belt light all illuminated at the same time. Techometer surged out of control, engine temp gauge displayed no reading and speedometer went to zero. Oh and yeah, the ac that was blowing very cold air switched to warm or hot. All of these issues happened at the same time on the highway at 60 mph. Ironically, the check engine light did not illuminate and the mechanic is unable to determine the cause as there is no code issued from the computer for this very dangerous problem. This problem happens randomly and there is no warning. The engine performs normal during this issue with the exception of the ac that fails every time. This issue can and has happened when the car is sitting parked with engine running and while in motion. I am so afraid that this eventually will cause a serious accident or death. And the most annoying part is no mechanic can tell any of us why this happens or how to fix it. Please, please, help us before the worst happens.

Toyota Camry O2 Sensor Location

Failure Date: 04/06/2012

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Camry. While parked, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician replaced two oxygen sensors. After the repair the check engine light illuminated intermittently and the contact noticed that the interior lights, radio and the mileage on the instrument panel continued to illuminate after the key was removed from the ignition. The contact replaced the battery but the failure continued. On another occasion while driving approximately 10 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. There were no further repairs performed to the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 139,000.

I have a check engine light that won't go away. Supposedly it was related to the O2 sensors. They've both been replaced, to no avail. A dual-certified Toyota master mechanic is scratching his head on this one. There's obviously nothing wrong with the engine as it's been performing well for the last couple of years, with an engine light burning brightly, regardless. It's very annoying as it's obviously a useless light, now, and all I can hope for is for the bulb to eventually burn out - as I don't care to get into tearing out the dash to remove it. Very very annoying (now have a piece of black duct tape over the lens but that's hardly a fix).
